I Am Always Making Lemonade

I always thought this was an issue. I looked it up once on AR15.com. The thread I found said it was not an issue. Go figure that forum is populated by the ignorant.

Well I was on M4carbine.net when I remembered the rear sight on my BMA2M4. I decided to ask the experts. Yep, it is a problem as I originally suspected.

Rear sights on AR-15 rifles do have some play in them, but they are not supposed to have that much play in them! The only fix I have been told is to buy a stripped upper and cannibalize the BM upper. I do not like this option. I am currently waiting to figure out how the armorers work on rear sights. I will pop in my AGI DVD on the AR15 also to see what they say if anything at all.

I have actually learned to shoot this puppy compensating for this problem. I can hit 100 yard targets no problem. So the rifle does work, but it is not up to par by any means. I know my carrier keys need a better staking. I was going to just replace the BCG and add a few things to accessorize it. Now I am going to learn how to do a rear sight job. Good thing I like to learn.

Anyway, this was bought before I knew much about the AR-15. I would not buy a BM product today. I did some minor research when I went to purchase this rifle back in 05 or 06. The net is full of crap, and I will end with some buying advice. Buy Noveske, LMT, Colt, LaRue, Daniel Defense, or Bravo Company. Frankly, I like LaRue.

And some wonder why I want to just become a gunsmith.

*Addendum*
Add a shim or buy a stripped flat top upper. That is all I got so far . . . not helping so I turn to my blog. I know somebody who reads this knows somebody that knows what to do.

The new upper idea is out as it is a waste of money. I would still have a upper with a borked sight. I see no point. I also do not have money burning a hole in my wallet. The only viable solution is to fix what I have . . .

I am not a gunsmith by any means but that is nowhere near strait. Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Is ok I can fix it in time.

I was gonna say "by the time all is said and done, you'll be a gunsmith", but ya beat me to it... I'm learning myself. Guns are a mechanical thing, and I'm a mechanic, but tearing them apart still spooks me a bit. Lack of familiarity I suppose. But that never stopped me for long!

Mayberry,

I know nothing about cars. I will dive into a firearm head first though.

The first question is: Is it the sight body itself that is bent or the mounting holes in the upper receiver?

If it's the sight body then it should be easy to swap out the bent part with a new straight one.

If it is the upper receiver then I'd probably call BM and see if they will fix it except that you bought it 4+ years ago. Still it doesn't cost much to call them and see what they say.

Shims will probably fix it.

BTW if the carrier key isn't staked properly then fix it. It isn't difficult. Heck, every man likes to wield a hammer once in a while.

Bitmap,

The body is straight.

The mounting holes are straight.

I have a feeling BM will blow me off. I talked to them once on the phone about the GP upper I had from them. *I loath BM due to my problems with them.*

How would I shim it? I do not even know how to make a shim, or where to get one.

I am gonna stake it. I posted about that during Projekt AR. I ran a side by side photo in the blog comparing LaRue's BCG against the BM BCG. I just waiting on the money for a MOACKS tool.
